JAYAPURA - The Papua Provincial Government is pushing for the acceleration of the One-Price Fuel program by strengthening energy distribution infrastructure in remote areas. One of the proposals submitted is to increase fuel supply capacity and build storage depots in several regencies.
Papua Governor Matius D. Fakhiri said the equalization of fuel prices in Papua does not depend solely on government policy, but also on the readiness of a distribution system capable of reaching areas with limited transportation access.
"Our visits to Waropen, Yapen Islands, and Numfor showed that fuel distribution capacity still needs to be increased. If distribution points are strengthened, supplies to other regions will run more smoothly," Fakhiri said in Jakarta on Tuesday (30/6/2026).
According to him, distribution delays are one of the main causes of high fuel prices in several areas. When supplies are delayed, retail prices in communities can rise far above the prices set by the government.
Fakhiri cited the situation in Mamberamo Raya Regency as an example. Fuel prices, which should be around Rp9,000 per liter, can surge to about Rp15,000 per liter due to disrupted distribution.
"This condition is certainly very burdensome for the community. Therefore, the first step that must be taken is to increase supply capacity so that distribution is no longer delayed. After that, we will continue to push for the One-Price Fuel program to be implemented comprehensively across Papua," he said.
In addition to increasing supply, the Papua Provincial Government has also proposed the construction of fuel depots in several regencies as reserve storage centers. The presence of depots is considered important to maintain stock availability while accelerating distribution to areas that have frequently experienced supply delays.
The Papua Provincial Government hopes the central government, together with PT Pertamina, can accelerate the strengthening of energy distribution infrastructure in Papua.
"This step is considered important to maintain fuel price stability, reduce disparities between regions, and ensure that people in remote areas have fair and affordable access to energy," he said. ***
