JAYAPURA – The Papua Provincial Government continues to collect data on the number of homes affected by flooding in Mamberamo Raya Regency, Papua. The flood, which occurred in early May, caused damage to residential areas in several villages along the Mamberamo River.
Acting Governor of Papua, Ramses Limbong, stated that the data collection is being conducted by the Social Affairs Office in collaboration with the district government. The results will serve as the basis for follow-up post-disaster response efforts.
“The data collection is still ongoing. This is important to ensure that response measures, both in terms of aid and reconstruction planning, are accurately targeted,” said Ramses in Jayapura on Saturday (May 10, 2025), after a working visit to Mamberamo Raya.
He mentioned that most of the affected homes are stilt houses built too close to the river’s surface. Therefore, resettlement and reconstruction are among the steps being prepared by the government.
“The houses are built too low. We will help raise their foundations. The hope is that if the river floods again, the houses won't be immediately submerged,” he explained.
Although the water has receded, Ramses emphasized that the impact of the flood is still being felt by the community. Several residents reportedly require medical services and logistical aid, including food, medicine, and children’s necessities.
The Papua Provincial Government has already distributed initial aid. Ramses assured that the regional government is still capable of handling the situation without needing to report to the central government at this stage.
“We haven’t reported it to the central government yet. But once the data collection is complete, we will prepare an official report,” said Ramses. ***
