JAYAPURA – The Papua Provincial Government continues to promote the strengthening of productive sectors as part of efforts to accelerate sustainable regional economic growth. As a result, Papua's economy is currently showing a positive trend, marked by increasing domestic activity, particularly in the agriculture sector and household consumption.
Head of the Bureau of Economy and Development Administration of the Papua Provincial Secretariat, Andry, said the strengthening of Papua's economy can be seen from the contribution of several strategic sectors that are beginning to grow and provide a tangible impact on regional economic growth.
According to him, from the production side, the agriculture sector has become one of the main contributors to economic growth after the construction sector. Meanwhile, from the expenditure side, household consumption remains the main driver of community economic activity.
"The development of the agriculture sector is showing a very positive trend. Rice production from January to March 2026 is estimated to reach 545.9 tons, an increase compared to the same period in the previous year," Andry said.
He explained that the increase in production is an indicator of the success of various government efforts to encourage the development of the agriculture sector as one of the pillars of the regional economy.
"This shows that Papua's agriculture sector continues to develop into a productive economic sector and contributes to regional economic growth," he said.
In addition to the agriculture sector, the purchasing power of the people of Papua has also remained stable. This is reflected in the Household Consumption Index, which reached 120.66. The figure indicates that community economic activity is still running well and is supported by increasing domestic demand.
"The high household consumption index reflects public confidence in improving economic conditions. Community economic activity also continues to move in a positive direction," he explained.
The Papua Provincial Government believes that strengthening the agriculture, services, construction, and tourism sectors will serve as an important foundation for building a stronger, more inclusive, and more competitive economic structure in Papua.
Through various development and community economic empowerment programs, the Papua Provincial Government is committed to encouraging the creation of new sources of economic growth so that development does not rely solely on the extractive sector, but also on productive sectors that provide direct benefits for community welfare.
With the positive trend continuing to be maintained, the Papua Provincial Government is optimistic that the regional economy will grow stronger and support improved welfare for communities throughout Papua. ***
