JAYAPURA – The combined inflation of the three cities in Papua was recorded at 0.69 percent with a Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 109.96 in May 2022.
The CPI cities were carried out by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Papua, namely Jayapura, Merauke and Timika, where two cities experienced inflation and one experienced deflation.
"Inflation occurred in Timika and Jayapura which were 0.59 percent and 0.96 percent, respectively, while deflation occurred in Merauke at 0.02 percent".
"Inflation is an increase in prices of goods and services in general while deflation is the opposite," said Head of Central Statistics Agency of Papua Province, Adriana Helena Carolina in Jayapura, Tuesday.
Furthermore, it was said that inflation that occurred in the two CPI cities of Papua Province was indicated by a decrease in the expenditure group index in the food, beverage and tobacco group by 0.57 percent; the transportation group by 1.65 percent and the personal care and other services group by 3.49 percent.
Meanwhile, some commodities experienced price increases in May 2022, including airfares, tomatoes, betel and chicken meat.
Several commodities that experienced a decline in prices, namely chili, yellowtail fish, white cabbage, chickpeas and long beans.
"The point is that in May 2022 out of 11 expenditure groups, eight groups contributed or contributed to inflation, three groups did not contribute/contributed to inflation," she said. ***
