JAYAPURA - The Agriculture Department of Papua encourages the manufacture of local organic fertilizers, of which all raw materials are available in every local customary area center.
So the coffee production can be produced sustainably by local farmers in Papua
"The raw materials such as grass and others have to add EM4 fertilizer".
"But sugar water can also be used for the mixture and we wait 2-3 weeks for the process and can be immersed in every coffee plant. The fertilizer can be obtained with reachable price and easy to get," explained the Head of the Agriculture Department of Papua, Semuel Siriwa, in Jayapura, Monday (5/9/2022).
He admitted that until now Papua Province has not been able to produce coffee sustainably, even though the demand from outside is very large.
The problem, still according to Siriwa, is at the farmer level. The coffee plants in Papua are the toughest thin because of the lack of fertilization.
"Even though this coffee plant needs good fertilization so that it can be produced continuously".
"We have to be honest about the cause of Papuan coffee cannot be produced sustainably because of obstacles in fertilizing coffee plants. So sometimes we need to intervene in preparing fertilizer for farmers, especially organic fertilizers so that it is hoped that coffee plants can bloom continuously," he explained.
Siriwa added, so far, if the coffee has been harvested once, they have to wait a long time to bloom again, so they cannot be produced sustainably.
"That's why I have lobbied to the central government and we got a program from the state budget for coffee development. Hopefully it can run smoothly," he said. ***
