JAYAPURA – The Papua Provincial Health Office has started taking precautionary measures against the potential spread of COVID-19, in response to a surge in similar cases reported in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Thailand.
Acting Head of the Papua Provincial Health Office, Dr. Arry Pongtiku, stated that the preventive steps include issuing public advisories encouraging people to maintain distance and wear masks when experiencing cough or cold symptoms.
“If you’re feeling unwell, wear a mask, get enough rest, and seek medical treatment. Early prevention of this virus is crucial,” said Dr. Arry.
He noted that so far, no similar cases have been detected in Papua. However, if any cases are identified, they would typically be reported by the Health Research and Development Agency.
“In Papua, we may return to previous health protocols — practicing good hygiene, handwashing, wearing masks, and maintaining distance — but this will only be implemented upon instruction from the central government,” he explained.
Dr. Arry also mentioned that even without an active virus outbreak, many residents are already accustomed to wearing masks. Moreover, the public has learned from the past COVID-19 experience that affected Indonesia, including Papua.
“At the very least, if the virus reappears, the public is already prepared, since we’ve been through this before,” he concluded. ***
