JAYAPURA - The Papua Provincial Government encourages residents who live in disaster-prone settlements to regularly follow the development of weather information from trusted sources.
This is to reduce the adverse effects of natural disasters that can threaten and even claim lives.
"One reliable source of information is the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG)."
"But in addition to BMKG, we also monitor the surrounding natural conditions, especially areas that are prone to disasters. Because awareness and preparedness from the community itself are expected to reduce the adverse effects of natural disasters that may occur," said the Head of the Service Police Unit and Papua Regional Disaster Management, Welliam Manderi in Jayapura, Wednesday (20/9/2023).
According to Manderi, currently, Papua is entering the transition of seasons, so extreme weather often occurs in various regions in Indonesia, including Papua.
Thus, preparedness is needed, especially in prone to flooding areas, landslides and coastal abrasion. More specifically in a number of districts that have the potential for disaster, such as in Biak Numfor, Supiori, Waropen and Sarmi regencies.
"When there are extreme waves, these areas usually experience significant damage and abrasion. So there really needs to be anticipation from the community," he said
Manderi added, weather conditions in Papua also do not recognize certain seasons like in other regions. Therefore, it is very important for all regions in Papua to always update weather information from BMKG. ***
