JAKARTA – Acting Governor of Papua, Ramses Limbong, visited the Directorate General of Electricity at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM RI). He was accompanied by the Speaker of the Papua Regional House of Representatives and the Chair of the Papua Provincial Chamber of Commerce and Industry on June 20.
The meeting aimed to discuss support for and the acceleration of electricity access, especially in rural areas of Papua Province. Governor Ramses expressed appreciation for the warm welcome given by the Director General of Electricity, Jisman P. Hutajulu, and conveyed the Papua Provincial Government’s commitment to work with the central government and relevant stakeholders to expand rural electrification.
“We greatly appreciate the support of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, especially the Directorate General of Electricity, for being willing to receive us and engage in direct dialogue on the village electricity needs in Papua. I have instructed the relevant provincial departments to immediately prepare and submit detailed electricity needs data for Papua for 2025–2030 within 1–2 days after this meeting,” said Ramses Limbong.
“Through collaboration between the central government, local government, and state-owned enterprises such as PLN, we hope the electricity needs of villages across Papua can be addressed promptly, as it will greatly impact development in other sectors,” he added. In his presentation, Director General Jisman P. Hutajulu outlined the current condition of the electricity system in Papua Province. The existing power plants have a total capacity of 424 MW, with approximately 92% still reliant on fossil fuels and the remainder using renewable energy sources.
He also noted that additional power plants with a combined capacity of 325 MW are planned for development by 2034, as part of the effort to increase the national electrification ratio and the percentage of electrified villages, including in Papua. “We hope the regional government can promptly complete the technical data on electricity needs in Papua.
It will enable our team to conduct in-depth assessments and drive the concrete development of the power system,” explained Jisman. The meeting was held in a cooperative and enthusiastic atmosphere. Both parties agreed to follow up on the discussion through a series of technical meetings to accelerate the development of electricity infrastructure in Papua Province. ***
