JAYAPURA – Upon arriving in Jayapura, Papua, on Friday, July 4, 2025, the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, Budi Gunadi Sadikin, accompanied by the Regional Secretary of Papua, Suzana Wanggai, immediately visited Jayapura Central General Hospital (RSUP).
During the visit, Budi Gunadi and his entourage, guided by the President Director of RSUP Jayapura, Petronella Marcia Risamasu, toured the hospital to observe the available medical service facilities. Budi Gunadi appeared very enthusiastic and even took several photos using his phone.
Budi Gunadi stated that there are already six Ministry hospitals in Papua, so residents no longer need to be referred outside the region (such as to Makassar), as RSUP has now become a referral hospital.
“Patients in the province of Papua no longer need to be referred to Makassar. Currently, referrals still go to Makassar, but now that this hospital is available, all referrals should come here. We already have specialist doctors and medical equipment. I will also be sending some senior doctors here regularly to provide medical services and training for specific cases,” said Budi Gunadi.
He also emphasized giving priority to native Papuans in filling available positions.
“The priority is for native Papuans. We are currently collecting the data. If positions are not yet filled, we will temporarily assign staff from Ministry hospitals while opening new civil servant positions,” he explained.
“I also urge our colleagues here to immediately serve the public, provide quality service, and maintain this facility’s beauty, because our goal is not only for Papuans, but for everyone who lives here.”
On the same occasion, Suzana Wanggai expressed her hope that the government would recruit and help prepare native Papuan workers to fill the needed positions at RSUP, as a form of support and equality for the indigenous Papuan people.
She also wished for the hospital services to facilitate access to quality healthcare for Papuan residents.
“I want this excellent hospital to truly benefit residents in line with the service standards it upholds,” she said, echoing the Minister’s message. ***
