JAYAPURA – The Provincial Government of Papua has started promoting the optimization of the marine and fisheries sector as a key source of local revenue. This move responds to declining regional financial capacity and the need for economic diversification.
The Head of the Papua Marine and Fisheries Office, Iman Djuniawal, stated that the maritime sector holds significant potential that remains largely untapped. He highlighted that future policies will focus on strategically and sustainably strengthening coastal economies.
“In light of declining fiscal conditions, the contribution of the marine and fisheries sector is vital. This could become a new mainstay for boosting local revenue,” Iman said in Jayapura on Tuesday (22/7/2025).
The Papua Provincial Government is currently developing a roadmap to advance the marine and fisheries sector through 2029. This document will guide cross-sector programs aimed at boosting the maritime economy.
Iman explained that the roadmap is being designed to ensure programs are well-directed and aligned with local conditions. The process involves stakeholders and considers the region’s available fiscal resources.
“Each phase requires careful planning so that the programs can be effectively implemented and genuinely benefit coastal communities,” he said.
In formulating its strategy, Papua is also collaborating with the Government of Aceh. This partnership is based on similar regional features and the shared status of special autonomy.
Iman noted that Aceh’s experience in managing the maritime sector can serve as a valuable model for Papua. The relevant best practices will be adopted and tailored to fit the local context.
He expressed hope that with clear policy guidance, the marine and fisheries sector can boost economic growth, create jobs, and significantly raise local revenue in the coming years. ***
