SERUI— In a strategic effort to accelerate equitable internet access across Papua, the Papua Provincial Government, through the Communication and Informatics Office, has officially handed over 34 units of Starlink VSat and 14 IndiBiz devices to Yapen Islands Regency.
These devices are installed at key public service locations, including schools, public health centers, and other facilities with limited or no internet connectivity. The initiative aims to overcome Papua’s challenging geography, which often limits coverage from cellular operators.
Acting Governor Agus Fatoni, speaking at the handover event, urged the community to make optimal use of these devices. He also highlighted their role in facilitating smooth data access for the General Elections Commission during the upcoming Repeat Voting process in areas with poor internet signals.
Accompanied by Technical Activity Executive Officer Thomas Sibi, Head of Papua Provincial Communications and Informatics Office, Jeri A. Yudianto, explained that each Starlink VSat unit is supported by equipment such as wallmount racks, routers, and access points. These components enhance coverage, maintain network stability, and enable real-time monitoring of service performance.
“This effort will continue across all regencies and cities in Papua, considering the province’s diverse geography and the limited cellular coverage in many areas,” said Jeri.
Additionally, Jeri noted that VSAT technology offers the fastest and most efficient backbone solution to extend internet access throughout Papua. The 14 IndiBiz units distributed will provide free Wi-Fi services via Fixed Broadband networks, primarily deployed at places of worship and public facilities in urban areas.
This program reflects the Papua Provincial Government’s strong commitment to accelerating digital transformation, enhancing public digital literacy, and improving technology-based public services throughout the region. ***
