JAYAPURA – The Papua Provincial Government has begun drafting the Strategic Environmental Assessment (KLHS) for the 2025–2029 Regional Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMD).
This marks the initial step in designing the province’s five-year development plan with a strong focus on sustainability.
Acting Papua Regional Secretary Suzana Wanggai explained that the KLHS is a strategic tool to ensure that development directions consider the region’s environmental carrying capacity and resilience.
“This document outlines the concept of sustainable development, aimed at minimizing potential environmental, economic, and social challenges in the future,” she said in Jayapura on Friday (August 8, 2025).
Suzana emphasized that natural resource management as development capital must align with environmental capacity, risk of impact, and utilization efficiency.
The Strategic Environmental Assessment will also guide the realization of Papua’s 2025–2045 vision, which highlights the blue economy, agro-industry, and creative economy.
The drafting process involves regional government agencies, vertical institutions, working groups, and community participation.
According to Suzana, engagement from all stakeholders is essential to ensure the document is not merely a paper plan but is implemented concretely in public policy. ***
