JAYAPURA – The Papua Province held a Simultaneous "Cheap Food Movement" across all regencies and cities in Papua. The activity followed the instruction of the Minister of Home Affairs, Muhammad Tito Karnavian, to maintain food supply and price stability while helping communities meet their basic needs at affordable prices.
The simultaneous Cheap Food Movement took place on Saturday (Aug 30) and was spread across 18 districts in several regencies/cities in Papua. Some food products were sold, including rice, cooking oil, and sugar.
Acting Governor of Papua, Agus Fatoni, stated that this Cheap Food Movement is a concrete step by the government to ease the burden on the community, maintain purchasing power, and support food security in Papua.
“Through the Cheap Food Movement, the government wants to ensure that people’s basic needs can be met at more affordable prices. We hope this activity can help the community while also curbing regional inflation,” said Fatoni.
The GPM activities included the sale of 1,020 kg of rice in Jayapura Regency (Depapre District) and 1,290 kilograms of rice in Keerom Regency (Arso District).
“In Yapen Islands Regency, it was held in five districts—South Yapen, Anotaurei, Yawakukat, Kosiwo, and Angkaisera—with a total of 5,500 kg of rice sold,” Fatoni explained.
Additionally, in Waropen Regency (Waropen Bawah District) 2,000 kg of rice was sold. In Biak Numfor Regency, held in three districts—East Biak, Biak Kota, and Samofa—2,385 kg of rice was sold. In Supiori Regency (East Supiori District) 1,080 kg of rice was sold, and in Sarmi Regency (Sarmi Kota District) 5,000 kg of rice was sold.
Meanwhile, in Jayapura City, the event was held in five districts: Abepura, South Jayapura, North Jayapura, Heram, and Muara Tami, with a total of 7,120 kg of rice, 43 liters of cooking oil, and 48 kg of sugar sold.
“In total, the simultaneous Cheap Food Movement in Papua Province managed to distribute 25,395 kg of rice, 43 liters of cooking oil, and 48 kg of sugar,” Fatoni said.
Residents across the various locations positively received the simultaneous Cheap Food Movement. The Papua Provincial Government is committed to continuing such initiatives in collaboration with the central government, the military, the police, and other relevant stakeholders. ***
