JAYAPURA – The Papua Provincial Government held a fun walk and mass exercise to commemorate the 42ndNational Sports Day in Jayapura City on Friday (Sept 12, 2025). Despite the rain, the event was lively and attended by hundreds of participants.
Participants came from various groups, including civil servants, students, youth, as well as members of the Indonesian National Military and Police. A strong sense of togetherness was seen as all participants mingled and enthusiastically followed the route.
The event was opened by the Acting Regional Secretary of Papua, Suzana Wanggai, who was accompanied by the Acting Head of the Papua Office of Sports and Youth, Sonya Monim, along with other provincial officials. Although National Sports Day should have been celebrated on September 9, the commemoration was held on September 12 due to a packed regional agenda.
On the occasion, Suzana read a speech from the Minister of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Indonesia. The minister emphasized sports as a unifying force for the nation as well as a national movement that builds character and resilience in society.
“This year, National Sports Day carries the theme ‘Sports Unite Us.’ This theme underlines the importance of sports in strengthening unity, as well as being a platform for achievement,” she said.
The minister also urged regional governments to strengthen physical education from an early age by providing basic facilities in schools. This is expected to provide safe spaces for children to play and engage in sports.
“In addition, public access to sports facilities must also be expanded. Multipurpose fields, running tracks, and open fitness facilities are needs that should be fulfilled in every region,” he said.
The minister stressed the importance of athlete development based on sports science. Structured training and systematic programs are considered key to producing world-class athletes.
“Regional governments are reminded to strengthen cross-sector collaboration in sports development. Sports are not solely the responsibility of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, but rather a joint effort involving all elements of the nation,” he added.
The minister also expressed appreciation to the sports community throughout Indonesia. The dedication of athletes, coaches, teachers, and the public was recognized as an inspiration for the younger generation to continue achieving.
Despite less favorable weather, the fun walk in Jayapura ran smoothly. The event reaffirmed the Papua Provincial Government’s commitment to making sports a medium for togetherness and fostering the spirit of unity among the people. ***
