JAYAPURA, September 18, 2025 – The Papua Provincial Government, through its Marine and Fisheries Office, is advancing plans to transform the Hamadi Fish Landing Base (PPI Hamadi) in Jayapura into a modern fisheries center. The initiative aligns with the recent visit of Indonesia’s Vice President, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who emphasized the strategic importance of Papua’s abundant marine potential.
Head of the Papua Provincial Marine and Fisheries Office, Iman Djuniawal, noted that Papua’s marine resources reach an estimated 1.3 million tons annually. With central government support, PPI Hamadi is envisioned as a hub for fish unloading, processing, and distribution, creating added value for fishermen and opening wider market opportunities, including exports.
“PPI Hamadi is poised to become more than just a landing site. It can evolve into a modern fisheries hub for transactions, processing, and inter-island distribution. With proper facilities, including a dock for larger vessels, Papua’s catches can reach broader markets and export destinations,” Iman said.
Currently spanning two hectares, PPI Hamadi faces limited horizontal expansion. To address this, the provincial government is preparing a vertical development plan for featuring fish processing units, a hygienic fish market, and administrative offices.
Iman emphasized that about 90 percent of PPI Hamadi’s 1,181 fishermen remain traditional, with 256 identified as Indigenous Papuans (OAP). Strengthening the facilities is expected to enhance fishermen’s welfare through fairer pricing, new business opportunities, and increased regional revenue.
“Support from the central government marks a critical momentum for Papua to position the marine sector as a pillar of the regional economy while improving the livelihoods of local fishermen,” he added. ***
