JAYAPURA – The Papua Provincial Government has designated HIV/AIDS prevention and control as a priority program since the first 100 days of the current administration of the Papua Governor and Deputy Governor.
Governor Matius Fakhiri reaffirmed this commitment during the commemoration of World AIDS Day in Jayapura on Monday (1/12/2025).
Fakhiri emphasized that Papua continues to experience the highest HIV epidemic burden nationally, requiring comprehensive, well-planned, and cross-sectoral efforts.
According to him, medical interventions must be accompanied by education, behavior change, and socio-cultural strategies tailored to the characteristics of Papuan communities.
“The 2025–2030 program focuses on health promotion, public education, and research to ensure that HIV information is delivered accurately and without stigma,” Fakhiri said.
The Governor also called for strengthened capacity among teachers, religious leaders, volunteers, and community organizations to reach indigenous communities and remote areas.
In terms of services, the government is pushing for continued support for People Living with HIV (PLHIV), including logistical assistance and the availability of antiretroviral medication.
Fakhiri further stressed the importance of cross-sectoral coordination and support from regency/city governments, particularly through budgeting and effective coordination mechanisms.
“The results of our HIV response efforts will not be optimal without strong consolidation at the regency and city levels,” he stated. ***
