JAYAPURA — The Papua Provincial Government has expressed support for athlete development efforts carried out by the Papua chapter of the Indonesian Athletics Association. One of the key agendas being prepared is the Papua Regional Athletics Championship, which is planned to take place in May 2026.
The support was conveyed by Papua Governor Matius D. Fakhiri while receiving the Indonesian Athletics Association of Papua, officials, and coaches in Jayapura City. The meeting discussed the progress of athlete development as well as preparations for the Regional Athletics Championship.
Papua PASI coach Ismail Sroyer said the Regional Athletics Championship is an important part of the athlete development process in the region. Through the championship, the potential of young athletes from various regencies and cities can be identified and prepared for higher-level competitions.
"This Regional Athletics Championship is an important part of developing athletic achievement in Papua. Through this event, we can identify the potential of young athletes who will later be prepared for the national level," Ismail said on Monday (March 9, 2026).
In addition to preparations for the championship, the Indonesian Athletics Association of Papua is also reorganizing its structure to improve the effectiveness of athlete development. Deputy Secretary of the Indonesian Athletics Association of Papua Davis Kambuaya said management evaluations are being carried out so the organization can work more optimally in supporting improved sports performance.
"At present, we are reorganizing the management structure. Of the 14 existing management bodies, some have already been evaluated so that the organization can focus more on improving athlete performance," Davis said.
He added that a number of regencies and cities in Papua have declared their readiness to take part in the Papua Regional Athletics Championship. So far, around eight regions have confirmed their participation.
This Regional Athletics Championship is expected to be an initial step in preparing Papuan athletes for various competitions, including the upcoming Pra-PON.
The Papua Provincial Government hopes that synergy between the regional government and sports organizations will continue to grow in order to produce outstanding athletes capable of bringing pride to Papua at both the national and international levels. ***
