JAYAPURA — Papua Governor Matius D. Fakhiri inaugurated the haemodialysis unit, or dialysis service, at Abepura Regional General Hospital (RSUD Abepura) in Jayapura City. The inauguration is part of efforts to improve the quality of health services for the people of Papua Province.
Fakhiri stressed that the availability of dialysis services is very important in helping patients with kidney failure. However, he also reminded the hospital not to focus only on treatment services, but also to identify the root causes behind the increasing number of kidney disease cases in the community.
"It is not only the dialysis facility that is important, but also finding the root of the problem as to why we have reached the point of needing dialysis," Fakhiri said in Jayapura City on Monday (March 16, 2026).
According to him, haemodialysis is the last resort for patients with advanced-stage kidney failure. Therefore, preventive efforts through public health education must become a major priority.
"I know this is the final step because only when there is no other option do we use dialysis. But we must find the cause and intensify outreach so that people like us do not end up needing dialysis," he said.
Fakhiri explained that chronic kidney disease has become one of the health problems that continues to rise in various regions, including Papua. Therefore, the availability of adequate dialysis facilities has become an important need for the community.
He said the facility is expected to improve access to health services for kidney failure patients, both for outpatient and inpatient care.
"The presence of this unit is expected to improve access to health services for kidney failure patients so that people no longer have to travel long distances to receive dialysis treatment," he said.
In addition, Fakhiri also asked hospitals in Jayapura to cooperate in providing services so that patients do not accumulate in only one hospital.
"If a hospital is already at full capacity, then don't let everyone line up there. Just distribute them, so that all hospitals can function and services can be delivered more quickly," he said.
On that occasion, Fakhiri also emphasized that the health sector is one of the key pillars of regional development. This is in line with the Papua Provincial Government's vision to realize the transformation of Papua into a region that is intelligent, prosperous, and harmonious.
"A modern and advanced Papua must be supported by a healthy society. If health is weak, then development will only be empty talk," he said.
He hopes that the presence of the haemodialysis unit at RSUD Abepura will not only serve as a medical service facility, but also become a center of education for the public on the prevention of chronic kidney disease.
"In addition to medical services, this unit is also expected to become an education center for patients and families to understand chronic kidney disease and maintain a healthy lifestyle," Fakhiri said.
Meanwhile, Director of RSUD Abepura, Daisy C. Urbinas, said in her report that the opening of the service went through various stages of licensing and verification in accordance with government regulations before it could finally begin operating in 2026.
"The process up to today, when the haemodialysis unit of the BLUD RSUD Abepura can finally be inaugurated, began in 2022, so it has been quite a long process," Daisy said.
She explained that all stages were carried out in accordance with regulations from the Ministry of Health regarding the implementation of dialysis services. One of the steps included applying for a business license to support business activities (PB UMKU), as well as undergoing verification and visitation by the Indonesian Society of Nephrology (PERNEFRI).
"Several stages of submission were made to PB UMKU, and verification and visitation were also conducted by the Indonesian Society of Nephrology, or PERNEFRI. In October 2025, these requirements were issued," she said.
Then, on January 28, 2026, the administrative process continued until the official recommendation from PERNEFRI Makassar was finally issued in February 2026.
"It was the recommendation from PERNEFRI in February 2026 that made it possible for all of us today to witness that the haemodialysis unit service at Abepura Hospital can now begin operating," she said. ***
