JAYAPURA — The Papua Provincial Government is promoting greater self-reliance in health human resources through the development of specialist doctor education in the region. This step follows the designation of RSUD Jayapura as a teaching hospital.
Papua Governor Matius D. Fakhiri said the policy opens access for doctors in Papua to continue their education without having to leave the region.
"Our doctors no longer need to leave Papua to become specialists," Fakhiri said in Jayapura on Thursday (April 2, 2026).
According to him, the regional government will encourage district and city governments to prepare young doctors to take part in specialist education at RSUD Jayapura.
"We will encourage regents to send young Papuan doctors to study specialist programs here," he said.
He believes this step will not only strengthen the capacity of medical personnel, but also support the equal distribution of health services across various parts of Papua.
Doctors who complete their education are expected to return and serve communities in their home regions.
The Papua Provincial Government hopes that the development of region-based specialist doctor education will strengthen the healthcare system and improve public access to medical services. ***
