JAKARTA — The Papua Provincial Government has begun exploring the development of rail transportation as part of efforts to improve interregional connectivity. The plan was discussed in a meeting between Papua Governor Matius D. Fakhiri and representatives of PT Kereta Api Indonesia in Jakarta.
Papua Governor Matius D. Fakhiri said the meeting marked an initial stage in designing a modern land transportation system in Papua.
"This meeting is an initial step toward bringing rail transportation to Papua," Fakhiri said on Tuesday (April 14, 2026).
According to him, the initial development is planned for the route from Jayapura City to Jayapura Regency as the first stage of implementation.
The Papua Provincial Government hopes that the plan can later expand more broadly to support more even development across Papua. ***
