JAYAPURA — Papua Governor Matius D. Fakhiri handed over humanitarian assistance to the Jayapura Regency Government on Wednesday (April 29, 2026), in response to flooding that affected several areas.
Fakhiri emphasized that the Provincial Government has a responsibility to be present and assist communities affected by disasters.
"We, from the Papua Provincial Government, and I as Governor, must help our brothers and sisters who have been struck by disaster," Fakhiri said after handing over the aid at the Jayapura Regent's Office.
He explained that the flooding was triggered by high rainfall intensity throughout March and April, causing widespread impact not only in Jayapura Regency but also in several other areas, including Keerom.
"This disaster has continued to occur in several regions, so the regency government certainly needs support from the provincial government to be present among the community," Fakhiri said.
The aid handed over included 1 ton of rice, 29 cartons of instant noodles, 2 cartons of tea, 4 cartons of coffee, bottled and sachet cooking oil, 2 cartons of sugar, 1 carton of stationery, 30 cartons of mineral water, 2 sacks of mosquito nets, 50 mattresses, as well as various family necessities and ready-to-eat food packages.
According to Fakhiri, the distribution of aid will be carried out by the regency government to ensure it reaches the right recipients based on the level of impact experienced by residents.
"I will leave it to the Regent to distribute it to his people according to the impact they have suffered," he said.
He also assured that assistance would not stop at the emergency response stage. The Papua Provincial Government, he said, will collaborate with the regency government to restore infrastructure.
"We will not stop there. We will work together to repair houses, irrigation systems, or roads affected by the disaster," he said.
Fakhiri expressed hope that the assistance would help ease the burden on the community and support the local government in post-disaster handling. ***
