JAYAPURA – The Papua Provincial Government continues to strengthen its regional development policy direction through the Development Area Unit, or SWP, approach as outlined in the Papua Province Spatial Plan.
This policy aims to ensure development that is equitable, integrated, and based on the leading potential of each region.
Papua Governor Matius D. Fakhiri, in his remarks at the Development Planning Meeting for the 2027 Regional Government Work Plan and Special Autonomy in Jayapura City on Thursday, April 30, said the division of development areas into three SWPs is a strategic step to accelerate development in Papua.
SWP-1, which includes Jayapura City, Jayapura Regency, Keerom Regency, and Sarmi Regency, is directed to serve as the main growth center by strengthening the trade and services sectors, as well as developing leading commodities.
The area is also focused on developing the marine and fisheries sector, tourism, agriculture, and horticulture, with Keerom Regency positioned as Papua Province's food barn.
"The Papua Provincial Government is committed to developing this area on a massive scale to strengthen food security and meet the basic needs of the community," the governor said.
Furthermore, SWP-2, which includes Waropen Regency and Mamberamo Raya Regency, is directed toward strengthening a natural resource-based economy, covering the forestry, fisheries, agriculture, tourism, and mining potential development sectors. This area is also projected to become the food barn of the Saereri region.
Meanwhile, SWP-3, which includes Biak Numfor, Supiori, and Yapen Islands regencies, is focused on becoming a marine-based area by strengthening marine tourism and seafood processing, while also serving as a connectivity hub for the eastern Papua region.
"The Papua Provincial Government is optimistic that, through the synergy of all stakeholders, the implementation of SWP-based development policies can drive regional economic growth and reduce various development indicators that remain in the low category," he concluded. ***
