TIMIKA – The Papua Provincial Government is encouraging stronger collaboration among regional governments across the Land of Papua to accelerate the implementation of Special Autonomy. This issue was discussed during the Strategic Coordination Forum for the Acceleration of Papua Development held in Timika, Central Papua, on May 11–12, 2026.
The forum brought together governors, regents, and mayors from across Papua to align regional development directions and strengthen the implementation of Special Autonomy programs.
Papua Governor Matius D. Fakhiri stated that accelerating development in Papua requires cross-regional cooperation so that government programs can be implemented more effectively.
According to him, the implementation of Special Autonomy should focus on the basic needs of the people, particularly in education, healthcare, the people's economy, and human resource development.
He emphasized that interregional synergy is important to ensure that the benefits of development are distributed more evenly, including in remote inland areas.
The forum also discussed several strategic issues, ranging from healthcare services, equal access to education, connectivity development, to the development of local potential-based economies.
In addition, regional leaders agreed to strengthen cross-regional coordination in supporting stability and accelerating development throughout the Land of Papua.
The Papua Provincial Government hopes that the forum will produce concrete measures capable of strengthening the sustainable implementation of Special Autonomy and delivering direct benefits to the welfare of the people. ***
