JAYAPURA - Papua Governor Lukas Enembe officially appointed an advocacy team to address a number of pressures and threats of criminalization from certain officials addressed to him.
The team was named the Legal and Advocacy Team for Justice, Democracy, and Human Rights in The Land of Papua, led by Saor Siagian, and strengthened by two members, Stefanus Roy Rening and Usman Hamid.
In his statement to the press, Advocacy Team Chairman Saor Siagian said he was concerned about the pressure and threat of criminalization to Governor Lukas Enembe.
Therefore, he and the team will encourage legal protection and security guarantees to the former Regent of Puncak Jaya.
"This is a state of law and democracy, there must be no abuse of power of any institution."
"This means that it is likely that we will also take legal action on litigation and non-litigation," he said in Jayapura, Friday (25/2/2022).
Saor added, the Governor of Papua some time ago had formed a Humanitarian Team for Violence Against Religious Leaders in Intan Jaya, especially the murder of Rev. Yeremia Zanambani.
Meanwhile, in 2019, proposed a regulation on resolving cases of human rights violations in Papua.
"We will encourage the follow-up to that policy. Let the victim see justice. Also for the sake of maintaining institutional reform, both National Armed Forces, Police, and State Intelligence Agency play a role in the land of Papua. And so that there is a guarantee for not to repeat."
"We are also authorized to conduct legal assistance, information and/or clarification to any agency related to legal and political legal issues in The Land of Papua, especially within the framework of special autonomy policy and protection of the Indigenous Papuan rights," he concluded.
Meanwhile, Head of the General Bureau of The Papua Regional Council, Elpius Hugi said, the newly formed advocacy team will also deal with legal issues and policies of the Papua provincial government related to Law No. 2/2021 on the Second Amendment of Law No. 21/2001 on Special Autonomy for the Papua Province.
"All three are considered capable in their positions, because they are advocates who have experience in the fields of law, respect for human rights and democracy, including the reform of security institutions at the national level," he said.
