JAYAPURA - The Papua Provincial Government positively welcomes the implementation of the Journalist Competency Test (UKW) held by the Press Council with the aim of increasing the professionalism and weight of writing for journalists in Jayapura City and its surroundings in overseeing the development process carried out by the local government in Papua.
"We welcome UKW by the Press Council where the participants are mostly journalists under the auspices of PWI Papua. We certainly strongly support so that more press in Papua are competent in writing, but critical and independent in overseeing the development process in this land," said Head of the Papua Communication and Informatics Department, Jeri A. Yudianto, in Jayapura, Monday (8/21/2023).
To improve the journalists' ability to present quality information and meet the principles of independent, accurate, and professional journalism, the Press Council held a Competency Examination attended by 30 journalists in Papua.
The Competency Exam, organized by the Press Council in collaboration with PWI and IJTI Papua, lasted in 2 days (21 -22 August 2023) at Swissbel Hotel in Jayapura City. The Chairman of the Press Council Partnership and Organizational Infrastructure Commission, Asep Setiawan, who officially opened the UKW activity, explained that in the information era, the Journalist Competency Test (UKW) conducted by the Press Council is one way to accelerate and improve the competence of journalists. This UKW has been held since 2020 and there are currently 34,000 journalists who have graduated from the Basic, Intermediate and Main levels.
"UKW is not only evaluating but also conducting studies and education," explained Asep. It is known that 30 journalists who participated in UKW consisted of 24 PWI journalists and 6 IJTI journalists. They attend UKW for basic and Intermediate levels. ***
