JAYAPURA - The Papua Provincial Government has implemented new regulations regarding the entry of purebred chicken eggs from outside the province by distributors, with the supply now limited by quotas.
The restriction is contained in the letter of the Governor of Papua No: 500.7/14362/SET, regarding the entry of purebred chicken eggs, to distributors supplying purebred chicken eggs - Tanah Tabi, dated November 30, 2023.
Acting Head of the Agriculture, Livestock, and Plantation of Papua, Debora Salosa, said the policy to regulate the amount of egg supply from outside the region to Papua aims to protect local farmers (chicken eggs) so that they can increase their income and welfare.
"The point is that with this governor's letter, it is one of the efforts of the Regional Government to protect local farmers."
"Therefore, we ask that egg distributors also cooperate with local farmers, so as not to experience losses from both parties," said Debora, Tuesday (5/3/2024), in Jayapura City.
According to Debora, the local Livestock and Plantation Office will certainly begin to increase supervision of the entry of purebred chicken eggs from outside the region to Papua because local egg needs are starting to be met.
Now, the number of local laying hen farmers has reached 80 percent of the total consumption needs of the community.
"Therefore, we will carefully calculate the number of local egg production and needs but clearly, the provisional count of local egg stock is sufficient to meet 80 percent of consumer needs," he said.
Head of Trade of the Department of Industry, Trade, Cooperatives, Small and Medium Enterprises of Papua, Herman Bleskadit said the condition of surplus eggs due to the unrestricted quota entering Cenderawasih Earth, had caused local farmers to experience losses.
"How do we want to maintain the price of local eggs, if eggs from outside Papua are sold at IDR 65 thousand and below," he said. ***
