JAYAPURA – Acting Governor of Papua, Agus Fatoni, invited the Papuan People's Assembly (MRP) to join efforts in ensuring the success of the upcoming re-vote for the Governor and Vice Governor election and in safeguarding the neutrality of civil servants. This was conveyed during his courtesy visit to the MRP office in Jayapura, Papua, on Wednesday (July 9, 2025).
“This revote is our shared responsibility to ensure it runs smoothly, safely, and successfully,” said Fatoni.
“At the time of voting, we need to mobilize the public to come out and vote. They must not stay away from polling stations. So, we achieve high voter turnout, which in turn strengthens the legitimacy of the government. This is our joint duty,” he added.
Fatoni also underscored the importance of maintaining civil servant neutrality during the re-vote. He reminded that while civil servants have the right to vote as citizens, they must continue to demonstrate professionalism in their duties. A neutral and impartial stance reflects the ethical and moral responsibility of civil servants to the public.
“Even though they have voting rights, civil servants must remain professional in carrying out their responsibilities,” he emphasized.
Fatoni further stated that the MRP, as a representative cultural body, is a strategic partner of the regional government. He acknowledged the MRP’s vital role, as it consists of traditional, religious, and women’s representatives—pillars of Papua’s social and cultural fabric.
“I come here as part of the big Papuan family. The MRP is a crucial institution for preserving the identity and future of Papua,” Fatoni remarked.
In addition to the re-vote being a top priority, Fatoni also outlined several other key focus areas during his leadership term. Among them is the need to implement effective and clean governance supported by all stakeholders, from the bureaucracy and legislature to civil society.
“We need strong collaboration and shared commitment to ensure transparent, clean, and people-centered governance,” he said.
Second, he emphasized the importance of maintaining Papua’s positive image at both the national and international levels. This, he explained, can be achieved through measurable and collaborative performance reporting across institutions and by actively involving the public.
“Papua must be recognized as a dynamic, progressive, and open region. A positive image is crucial for building trust and strengthening Papua’s position in national and global affairs,” he continued.
Third, to promote public welfare, Fatoni stressed the importance of boosting the regional economy and expanding fiscal space. His strategy includes creating more jobs, increasing locally generated revenue, and strengthening the local economy based on Papua’s unique potential.
“All these priorities will move forward in a parallel and an integrated manner. The provincial government is committed to working swiftly, precisely, and with accountability to build a more prosperous Papua,” he concluded. ***
