JAYAPURA – Acting Governor of Papua, Agus Fatoni, paid a courtesy visit to the Papuan People's Representative Council (DPRP) as an initial step to strengthen synergy between the executive and legislative branches. During the meeting, Fatoni emphasized the importance of collaboration in regional financial management, accelerating budget realization, and a joint commitment to ensuring a peaceful and successful re-vote for the Governor and Deputy Governor of Papua.
“The Papuan People's Representative Council and regional heads form a single unit in governance. We function together to support and strengthen each other. I deliberately came here to meet, build rapport, and have discussions,” said Fatoni at the DPRP Office in Jayapura, Papua, on Wednesday (June 9, 2025).
On this occasion, Fatoni encouraged objective and rational budget management aligned with the region’s fiscal capacity. He underscored the need for budget rationalization, both through the Revised Regional Budget this year and in planning for the following year.
“We must not force expenditures if there is no funding. If the deficit continues unchecked, our burden will only grow. Let’s boost revenue and optimize our spending,” he explained.
Fatoni outlined several strategies for optimizing revenue, including increasing Local Own-Source Revenue, General Allocation Funds, Special Allocation Funds, and Fiscal Incentive Funds, which are awarded based on regional performance. Key performance indicators include handling inflation, reducing extreme poverty, addressing stunting, and increasing the use of domestic products.
Regarding the upcoming PSU, scheduled for August 6, 2025, Fatoni called on all parties—particularly the DPRP—to encourage public participation and maintain a conducive environment. He expressed hope that the re-election process would proceed safely, peacefully, and with high quality.
“Successful regional elections are defined by high voter turnout and a stable atmosphere. Let’s encourage the public to go to polling stations and exercise their right to vote,” he urged.
As a career bureaucrat and civil servant, Fatoni stressed the importance of maintaining neutrality during the elections. He called on all government officials to refrain from political activity and to be open to oversight while performing their duties with professionalism and integrity.
Fatoni also reiterated his commitment to open communication and coordination. He offered direct support from the Ministry of Home Affairs—particularly from the Directorate General of Regional Finance, which he currently leads—to assist in accelerating development in Papua.
“This is like returning home. Back in 2007, I served in Papua as the Head of the Special Autonomy Section. So, I understand Papua well and am ready to work hand in hand to advance the Land of Papua,” he concluded.
This meeting marks the beginning of a stronger synergy between the Papua Provincial Government and the Papuan People's Representative Council. It also lays a vital foundation for building effective, efficient, and impactful governance that directly benefits the welfare of the Papuan people. ***
