JAYAPURA – The Papua Provincial Government is prioritizing community education to minimize disaster risks in vulnerable areas. Acting Governor Agus Fatoni, represented by Expert Staff Cyfrianus Mambay, emphasized that raising public awareness is the most effective way to reduce threats such as landslides and floods.
He urged residents in high-risk zones, including steep slopes, to relocate before the rainy season, and reminded the public not to dump waste in rivers to prevent flooding.
Based on data from the Papua Regional Disaster Management Agency, a high flood potential is shown in Jayapura City, Keerom, and Sarmi, while earthquake-prone areas include Nabire, Keerom, and Pegunungan Bintang.
Acting Head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency, Wisnu, said disaster preparedness efforts include evacuation drills, school-based campaigns, and cooperation with local leaders. The “Papua Resilient, Papua Great” coordination meeting brought together representatives of the Regional Disaster Management Agencies from across the province to enhance skills and accelerate emergency response. ***
