JAYAPURA – In commemoration of National Batik Day on October 2, 2025, the Papua Provincial Government reaffirmed its strong commitment to preserving and developing Papuan Batik and Noken, two invaluable cultural treasures recognized by UNESCO as part of the world’s cultural heritage.
Head of the Papua Provincial Communication and Information Office, Jeri Agus Yudianto, emphasized that the government’s support for Batik and Noken extends beyond cultural preservation—it also aims to strengthen Papua’s creative economy sector.
“The Papua Provincial Government is deeply committed to preserving Batik and Noken because both are world heritage assets we should be proud of. We want these cultural traditions to remain vibrant while also generating economic benefits for the people of Papua,” said Jeri in Jayapura, Thursday (October 2, 2025).
Jeri further explained that the provincial government had issued Circular Letter No. 000.8.6/0054/SET dated January 15, 2025, mandating the use of Papuan Batik attire and Noken bags by civil servants every Thursday and Friday. The policy seeks to strengthen local cultural identity and foster pride in regional products.
To further empower local artisans, the government—through the Department of Trade and Industry—has established a Papuan Batik Production House to support small and medium-sized batik enterprises, enhance artisans’ craftsmanship, and expand market access.
These initiatives are expected to preserve cultural heritage, create sustainable economic opportunities for Papuan communities, and reinforce Papua’s cultural identity both nationally and internationally. ***
