JAYAPURA — Jayapura Regional General Hospital (RSUD Jayapura) is preparing a hospital service development plan by strengthening intensive care capacity, particularly in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This effort is aimed at ensuring that critically ill patients, including infants, can be treated more quickly and effectively as the demand for referral services in Papua continues to rise.
Acting Director of RSUD Jayapura, Andreas Pekey, said that limited ICU and NICU space remains one of the main challenges in service delivery. According to him, population growth and the high number of referred patients from various regions have continued to increase the need for intensive care.
"The hospital management has already identified the problem and has begun preparing the design for a new building. This building is planned to accommodate intensive care service needs for both adult patients and infants," Andreas said on Monday (12/1/2026).
He explained that, out of around 300 available beds, the ideal ICU capacity should be about 10 percent of the total. However, the current intensive care capacity still falls short of that need.
"Jayapura is no longer what it used to be. The population has grown, emergency cases have increased, but hospital capacity has not expanded in balance," he said.
According to Andreas, the addition of a new building and expanded ICU capacity are expected to reduce patient overcrowding in the Emergency Department. With adequate intensive care services, treatment for critically ill patients can be faster, more focused, and contribute to improved patient safety.
"We are targeting the strengthening of these critical care services as part of a comprehensive improvement of the hospital service system. The hope is to improve patient safety and the quality of healthcare services in Papua," he said. ***
