BIAK NUMFOR — The Papua Provincial Government is reorganizing regional assets in Biak Numfor Regency by temporarily closing Hotel Mapia. This policy has been taken as part of a revitalization effort so that the government assets can function optimally again and make a tangible contribution to the regional economy.
Papua Governor Matius Fakhiri decided after directly inspecting the condition of Hotel Mapia on Monday (12/1/2026). Based on the inspection, the hotel was found to require comprehensive improvements, both in terms of the building itself and its supporting facilities.
"After seeing the condition of the asset firsthand, I consider Hotel Mapia no longer fit for use. The building and its facilities require major repairs so that they can function optimally again," Fakhiri said in Biak.
The Governor explained that the temporary closure is part of the government's effort to improve asset governance. The revitalization is intended to support an increase in Regional Original Revenue through the tourism sector and accommodation services in Biak Numfor.
"We want government assets to be managed more professionally so that their impact on the region is clear," he said.
In addition to the physical improvements, the government also emphasized that the reorganization would take labor aspects into account. The Governor stated that the government's obligations to Hotel Mapia employees would be settled during the closure period before the revitalization process begins.
"We will fulfill our obligations to the employees. After that, the acceleration team will work to comprehensively restore this hotel," he said.
Hotel Mapia is an asset owned by the Papua Provincial Government, built in the 1990s, and was once one of the pillars of the accommodation sector in Biak. In recent years, limited maintenance has caused the hotel's condition to lag behind other hotel facilities in the area. ***
