JAYAPURA — The Papua Provincial Government has asked security authorities to strengthen supervision over the distribution of staple goods ahead of Eid al-Fitr. The move is intended to maintain price stability and ensure food availability for the public.
Papua Governor Matius D. Fakhiri said that monitoring is necessary to prevent hoarding practices that could trigger price increases in the market.
"There must be no stockpiling that affects fluctuations in staple food prices in the market," Fakhiri said in Jayapura on Wednesday (March 11, 2026).
According to him, the Ramadan and Eid period is often exploited by certain parties seeking profit through hoarding practices. Therefore, the government has asked security authorities to take firm action if violations are found.
"If anyone tries to take advantage in that way, it will certainly affect the market. We ask security authorities to act firmly," he said.
The Papua Provincial Government continues to monitor the development of staple goods distribution and prices throughout Ramadan and ahead of Eid al-Fitr. This oversight is being carried out to ensure that public needs remain available at stable market prices.
Through this measure, the government hopes that economic activity ahead of Eid can proceed smoothly without disruptions to food supplies in Papua. ***
