JAYAPURA — The Papua Provincial Government is pushing for the development of Korido Port in Supiori Regency as part of efforts to improve maritime connectivity and strengthen Papua's position within the Pacific regional sea transportation network.
The development plan was discussed in an audience meeting between the Papua Provincial Government and the Class III Korido Port Administration Unit (UPP) Office in Jayapura. The meeting focused on preparing the Detail Engineering Design (DED) as the basis for the port's development.
Head of the Class III Korido of Administration Unit, Willem Thobias Fofid, said that Korido Port currently holds the status of a regional feeder port, as established through a decision by the Governor of Papua.
"In this meeting, we conveyed the process of proposing the preparation of the DED for the short-term development of Korido Port," he said on Monday (March 16, 2026).
The planned development includes extending the pier, constructing a walkway area, and adding landside facilities such as commercial areas and other port-supporting infrastructure.
Acting Head of Papua's Transportation Agency, Mathius Wally, said that the plan is in line with the connectivity development priorities set by the Papua Provincial Government.
According to him, port infrastructure development requires collaboration between local governments and technical ministries, given the region's fiscal limitations.
"The provincial government's fiscal condition is currently limited, so support from ministries and creativity from regional agencies are needed to make this development happen," Wally said.
The government is targeting completion of the DED for Korido Port no later than July 2026 so that physical construction can begin the following year.
In addition to Korido Port, the government also sees potential for developing other strategic ports in Papua, including Depapre Port in Jayapura Regency, which is considered to have an important position in Indonesia's connectivity with the Pacific region. ***
