JAYAPURA — The Papua Provincial Government is awaiting regulations from the central government regarding the planned implementation of a work-from-home scheme as part of the national energy efficiency policy.
Acting Regional Secretary of Papua, Christian Sohilait, said that the regional government would adjust to the policy once an official decision is issued by the central government.
"We are still waiting for the government regulation that will be issued. After that, we will make the necessary adjustments in the region," Christian said in Jayapura on Thursday (March 26, 2026).
According to him, the Papua Provincial Government has already begun an initial review to assess the impact of the policy, including its potential for energy savings and its effect on government activities as well as other sectors.
"If one day is spent working from home, we are calculating how much fuel and electricity can be saved," he said.
He explained that the policy could have a broad impact, not only on government agencies, but also on the private sector, the military and police, and the education sector.
"This is not only about the government, but it could also affect various sectors, including schools," he said.
The Papua Provincial Government will also consider the readiness of supporting infrastructure, particularly communication networks in various regions, before the policy is implemented.
The discourse on implementing WFH as part of energy efficiency efforts was previously raised in a national forum in response to global developments affecting energy consumption.
The Papua Provincial Government has assured that it will follow the policy direction of the central government while still taking regional conditions into account. ***
