JAYAPURA – The Papua Provincial Government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the safety and protection of journalists during the commemoration of World Press Freedom Day, or WPFD, 2026 in Jayapura. The commitment was conveyed at the opening of the event at the Lukmen Hall of the Papua Governor's Office on Monday, May 4, 2026.
Papua Deputy Governor Aryoko Rumaropen said the regional government is opening space for safe journalistic work amid various challenges in Papua.
"The regional government is committed to ensuring that journalists can work safely and without pressure," Aryoko emphasized.
He explained that geographical conditions and field dynamics pose their own challenges, requiring support from all parties to keep the working space for the press conducive.
According to him, Papua's appointment as host of WPFD is an important momentum to strengthen the role of the press in regional development.
"This is an opportunity to show that press freedom must be present in all regions, including Papua," he added.
In addition, the event also provides space for dialogue on the development of the media ecosystem, including relations between press companies and digital platforms.
"We hope the momentum of WPFD can strengthen collaboration between the government and the media in delivering accurate information to the public," he concluded. ***
