JAYAPURA – The Papua Provincial Government has demonstrated its concern for residents affected by the fire in the Mandala area of Jayapura City by distributing essential supplies to people who remain at evacuation shelters.

The provincial government delivered three truckloads of aid to meet the various needs of residents who, as of Wednesday (Sept. 2), were still staying in temporary shelters around Mandala Field.

Acting Papua Regional Secretary Christian Sohilait said the assistance reflected the government’s concern and commitment to supporting residents affected by the disaster.

“The assistance we are providing is based on what the fire victims currently need,” Christian said.

Before distributing the aid, the Papua Provincial Government coordinated with evacuation post managers to identify the remaining needs of residents as they entered the third day following the fire.

“What is still lacking are items related to underwear. For those who want to help, this is one of the areas where support is still needed,” he said.

As part of its efforts to assist affected residents, the Papua Provincial Government has also opened the Papua Main Stadium as an additional evacuation facility.

Several supporting facilities at the stadium have been activated, including clean water services, to help meet residents’ basic needs while they remain at the evacuation site.

“We hope that following today’s incident and over the next few days, none of the evacuees will become ill,” Christian said.

The Papua Provincial Government has also provided garbage bags at several evacuation points. The measure is intended to maintain environmental cleanliness and prevent health problems while residents remain in temporary shelters.

Christian said assistance for fire victims would not end when the emergency response period concludes. The Papua Provincial Government, together with the Jayapura City Government, has begun preparing follow-up measures to ensure that residents’ needs continue to be met after the emergency response period ends. ***
